Help. unusual numbness in portion of leg

Hello.
I'm 22 year old woman living with her mother, and lately shes been having some problems.
Shes only 45, and she has developed an odd numbness in a small portion of her upper leg. It comes and goes. We seem to see this problem surface more when any physical activity is involved.
The problem is, it doesn't take much to set it off.
It can be set off by walking to the store, or sometimes by simply getting up and down too often.
The numbness only occurs in her lower thigh, directly above the knee. She describes it as being a "Square" of numbness, because she says the numb area makes the shape of a square, even though it cant physically be seen.
Anybody have any input about this?
Comments are appreciated.
Thank you.

  • It could be a pinched nerve. Take her to a doctor.

  • She needs to go to the hospital pronto. Loss of nerve function is never good, and can be a sign of a more serious problem like a clot.

  • We've been to the doctors, they just seem to dismiss us as hypochondriacs. See, my mom has alot of illnesses... So i guess doctors just dont take her seriously

  • I'm no dr. but could be deep vein thrombosis (dvt), a blood clot in her leg. I think that is usually pain, not numbness, but I'm not sure. At any rate, she needs to see a dr. Why not take her?

  • Take her to the doc. Could be sciatic nerve, pinched nerve or an IT band problem. It also wouldn't be a bad idea to see the doc because it could possibly be a blood clot if she isn't active. Good luck!
