I like to sit outside when it is dark out and relax. I can’t do it a lot now where I live because after a little bit of sitting outside I start hearing heavy breathing noises. It doesn’t stop and the breathing gets closer and closer so I get scared and go back inside. Am I just being paranoid or is there some animal out there ready to attack me at night?

It's El Chupacabra. You should run like hell and get a new place to live.
You could respond with sexual sound effects. The breather might be impressed and introduce herself.
It's probably your own breathing you're hearing. I did that once when I was camping alone in a scary place due to a flat tyre and was terrified until I realised it was my own breathing I was hearing.
Maybe you've never heard of it, but something invented in 1899 might be helpful to you. If you live in Britain, it's called a torch; if you're American, you can find this amazing device sold under the name "flashlight".
Alternatively, you can just go sit in the dark and enjoy freaking yourself out.
