I had to vote for "Yes only once" because my situation was not exactly there.
I got myself a cat while I was on shore duty and had him for a few years before I returned to ship-duty.
During deployments I found him housing either at a friend's or at the vet's since my vet did boarding.
Finally I had a long deployment coming up followed by transfer to an overseas duty station.
So... I made a point of ensuring my cat had a good home to go to. Thankfully that place ended up being with family members so I can still see him when I visit, and get updates and photos of him.
