Have you ever got a pet and got rid of it immediately?

  • When I was 11, one of my family's two dogs died. We grieved for a year and then decided we had enough love for two dogs again. My mum had heard about someone who was mistreating a dog of the same breed we'd always had and she was determined to march in. And it kind of worked. The dog came back to our house. But she was terrified by our remaining dog, who was extremely jealous and not at all happy at sharing us.

My mum decided enough was enough after two days. I remember being angry and blaming her for taking the easy way out of this and passing the dog on. In retrospect, she was right. An ill-treated dog doesn't need to go to a home where they're going to be ill-treated either by humans or another dog.

    • I'm gona reply to you rather than get into the cat debate down below. Glad I helped you with something you posted ...

We got a rabbit once for our son (8 yo), think it was incontinent coz I was changing newspapers in the hutch up to 5 times a day! After a month or two, I put an ad for it, hutch, and all its accoutrements, free to a good home in the pet shop. My son didn't miss it for a week! Then we told him it had died of starvation coz he never went near it! We're such bad parents ;o)

Took in a rescue dog after that - which we still have :o)
