I think there's an option missing from you poll. I think that many depressed people in desperation and hopeless frustration often truly believe for a short period that ending it all would be best, but as soon as they come out of it realize they'd probably never have gone through with it.
The most worrying condition is when one is perfectly emotionally calm and still considers suicide a valid option. These people are planning it, are dropping hints, and are coming to terms. This, I believe, is the "final" stage.

There are different levels of depression. In clinical depression, one is usually pretty darned hopeless. Everyone goes through bad times, but it's not really depression until you've lost all hope. I think people confuse depression with deep sadness or dejection. After something traumatic; a break-up, illness, moving away, a death in the family, it's perfectly natural to be miserable and in grief. This isn't chemical depression though. If you can hope for a brighter tomorrow, you don't yet have a serious enough condition to require outside help.
Depression is a buzz word because it's being over-diagnosed, I think, especially in teens. Depression will present itself in stages. You start out feeling miserable, dejected, and put-out. Then you often progress to being frustrated, angry, and feeling misunderstood and alone. After this point, depression becomes comorbid with anxiety and the sufferer often begins to experience physical pain associated with the depression. If one is in this stage long enough, the third stage will begin. At this point, the sufferer becomes quite flat affect and no longer shows any interest in things they used to like to do or people they used to talk to. At some point, without help, the sufferer may come to the realization that they have no choice but to end their own suffering, and think of death as rest or relief.
