I was sleeping with (and subsequently fell madly in lovelust with) a girl who was far more intelligent than I was. I admired her, though she also respected me. But it turns out she was batshit crazy so I'm at peace with it.
Though it never blossomed into a relationship (unrequited), the best situation I've ever had was with a girl who was extremely clever, but just barely shy of being as clever as me. I'll admit it. Though she did beat me in chess more often than not.
The ideal relationship involves mutual respect, and if an intellectual imbalance makes that difficult for you or your partner, there may be an issue.
