I feel that there are many different types of intelligence and by that virtue, intelligence itself is difficult to define. But for the sake of this post, I will simply rely on traditional definitions of intelligence and not go much deeper.
I have dated one person that could have been considered my intellectual superior, but at the same time, he had the same deal going on as me. Well articulated enough to trip someone that is of lesser articulation up in argument. Our debates went in circles for days and days and days... Our intelligence was very much alike and I believe that we had the same reasoning skills, however, the context of our cultural backgrounds caused so much difference for us that it was difficult to overcome. In the end, I was unwilling to deal with his criticism and constant digging and debating and he was unwilling to agree to disagree and make truce.
In short, the fucker loved to argue and my being tolerant and nonchalant and acknowledging the validity of his points of view as well as conceding when I felt it fit was not good enough for him. He literally liked attacking every argument, even his own. I understood his mentality, but it is not something I'd like to do while I am trying to eat, fuck, smoke up, relax or drive. By that virtue, he claimed that I was a simple minded sheep. I'm pretty sure that within a few years, I will be able to understand his train of thought much more clearly and develop a better one for myself, what is living if one does not progress, right? After all, he had a few years of experience on me and, like I said, different upbringing and background. But still. What a dick. I'll be smoking up with him on Monday.
I am married to someone whom I believe is my intellectual equal. We have different types of intelligence, however. Our intelligence is very complimentary and we work with each other's thought processes. Although we have differences in opinion, we are willing to agree to disagree and agree on more important matters.
Have you ever been in a relationship with someone....
