I was in Alaska walking alone along the railroad tracks, looking down so as not to stumble, when something made me look up. Standing about 10 feet from me was this bear. When you encounter a bear, the one thing you are not supposed to do, (unless you have someone with you who is a slower runner than you) is run. So I stood there looking at him and he at me, for a short time. I slowly backed off, hopped across a small creek and made my way into town, without further problems. I wasn't attacked, but it was probably a near thing.
