Has anyone been to the twin towers before 9/11?

I'm interested to know if anyone got the chance to see those buildings before they were destroyed.

I know a guy, a drummer for a rock band, who's music label was housed in one of those buildings, and he's been there plenty of times.

I want to visit the twin towers for a little history one day. Despite not being born that year.

Yeah, I would really want to visit that site too. They've turned it into a museum.

Tbh,before 9/11,I had never heard of the World Trade Center. And I am from the U.S. I mean no disrespect to the victims.

As an Englishman I'm always puzzled as to where America's obsession with the 9th of November comes from. :P

(For anyone reading this who lost a friend or loved one on September the 11th, 2001, I apologise if this lame joke about date format came across as insensitive to such a delicate topic)

I was 9 when it happened. Hard to believe that it was nearly 20 years ago. I still remember watching it on TV while my mom completely started freaking out. Very surreal time.

I've toured NY city more than once and did see the Twin Towers at least a decade prior to 9/11.

I also toured the Empire State Building (and went to the observation desk), and saw a lot of other things. The old Chrysler Building stood out in my mind, and so did the Guggenheim art museum that Frank Lloyd Wright designed.

    • The Chrysler building, in my opinion, is the most beautiful skyscraper in NYC, and possibly the world.

Only outside and the bottom floor.

I visited in '97, walked around the ground level halls with all the shops. Nothing remarkable.

Nothing remarkable? They were one of the tallest in the entire world. They were incredible

It was boring, I spent a few minutes wandering around in there and left.

No, I was only 6 when it happened and have never been to New York.

Yeah, my mom moved to New York when I was young, and I saw then while visiting. They were just tall buildings until they weren't.

    • Ok. Were you more impressed with the ESB?

I have no idea what that means? hahahaha

I just went as a tourist when I was visiting my mom. We were gonna go up to windows on the world (top floor of the north tower), but I'm scared of heights so we got brought in by a friend who worked there & took the elevator used by business people to the sky lounge, I believe, which was half way up-ish???

        That's where I noped out.

I'm from Chicago & I've been to the top of what was formerly called the Sears tower, which I think was still the tallest building in the world on 9/11. Up high, the buildings sway in the wind & you're above the clouds. I don't even like to imagine what the impact felt like, or how long it took the poor jumpers to reach the ground.

        • The ESB is shortened word for " Empire State Building ". That building might not be the tallest, but it has a beauty to it that no modern skyscraper can really match, in my opinion. Oh yeah, the Sears Tower was the tallest in terms of roof-height when 9/11 happened. The ESB was the tallest from 1931 to 1971

Duh! Sorry, I thought you meant something IN the WTC, so I was incredibly confused. I was thinking to myself, this asshole better not be referring to 9/11 as the empire striking back lol.

It's beautiful. A lot of art deco detail work that you can't necessarily see in pictures. I, of course, noped out on the outdoors view. I'm actually going back to NYC in a few days.

Chrysler building is my favorite though.

You should go. It's very interesting. But go with someone who knows the city because it's very confusing and nobody helps you.

I went to miami once and I tried to figure out how to ride a bus. It was like you said people would get mad and not explain how to do it. Never rode a bus in my life i didnt know how I'm supposed to know what bus goes where. The people seemed like they were all in a rush. I bet New York is 100x more of a rush than Miami too lol

I was in New York in 1969 when the were building them and looked down unto the huge basement 7 stories down.

    • Nobody back then could possibly have thought that they would outlive those buildings.

Right. In fact, I remember going over the Verrazano bridge in about 1982 and saying that I thought they looked gross, and my nephew joked, "What do you want them to do, tear them down?"

        • That foreshadowing is pretty creepy. But yeah, those towers seemed to have been really panned back in the days. Some architectural critic back in the 60s said that those buildings looked like the boxes that the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building came in. I found that one hilarious.

That is funny. While the buildings themselves were an incredible achievement, I thought they were unimaginative.

            • What is your opinion on the new One WTC? That building is absolutely insane, state-of-the-art in terms of tech and safety features. Overengineered to the point it's ridiculous. If a 767 crashed into that building, I'm pretty sure the building would still stand, and could be fixed. Almost nobody would die. Too bad, I think that building is a bit boring-looking too.
