    Rats are very smart and can be trained much more so than a hamster.

    I had a pet rat a long time ago very appropriately named...Scrotum

      Did he smell very bad? A few people say they stink, but I've never heard that until now. I plan on completely washing down the cage once a week.

        No, he did not smell bad. Now the two ferrets I had, did smell bad...

        If you clean the cage thoroughly and make sure the rat is clean as well, they shouldn't stink. If you're cleaning both well, and it stinks something is wrong with it and you should take it to the vet.
