Got invited to a halloween party, i'm nervous

So this year I finally got invited to a Halloween party. I suffer from social anxiety but I've been dying to go to one, so now I'm pretty happy but also nervous. The thing that's making me nervous is knowing that it's a costume party. I really want and I'll to go, I just never wore a costume in front of anyone else before. So, what are some tips you have to overcome this? What was it like the first time you went to a halloween/costume party?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Relax and have fun. You get to be someone/something else for an evening.

    • I really want that, I'm just afraid my anxiety will keep me from fully having fun.

Not only do you get to dress like someone else, you get to take on their personality and put your fears aside. Dress as someone, or something that makes you feel confident. Think of it as being in disguise. Being disguised as a confident person. But don't dress as say a slutty nurse if unwanted sexual attention will make you feel uncomfortable. Or if you are a skinny guy, don't try to be Mr. Macho unless you are trying to make people laugh. Plus if you put together a good costume the compliments you get will also help make you feel better.

        • Yeah that's the thing, I can picture myself being able to roleplay whatever I am, and honestly it doesn't seem that hard. My only worry is that this experience will be so overwhelming I won't have the capacity to process everything at once. But it's like they say right, "Fake it till you make it"?

I will do my best. Thank you so much, you gave me the best advice I've ever received from this website :)

Using costume which covers your face will surelly reduce anxiety since you might be "hidden" and can look around without people making direct eye contact

You won't be the only one with a costume. I'd say it would even be weird if you were the only one without a costume.
So you should be fine. Just don't dress up as a naked man though, it shouldn't help your anxiety.

I went to a costume party with my cousin, and his wife two years ago, and I went as cat.

    • That's so cute! I'm thinking on going as a dinosaur. You know, like those onesies.

        • I'm not much into that, but it's the Allosaurus. Because he looks scary but cute at the same time.

That actually sounds like a good costume. I don't think there'd be alot of other dinosaurs so you might get compliments.

        • Thanks! I was kinda worried it was a cheap costume, but honestly I have always wanted to wear it someday.

if you're shy you can feel comfort being behind a mask or costume. I dressed up for the first time last year after years and it was a lot of fun! I recommend it.. Get a cool and fun costume together. Then you can do what I did and dressed up 3 days in a row for the Halloween season.

    • I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who had to wait so much time to get to wear a costume! It may be weird for me specifically, but I'm gonna go on a dinosaur onesie. I just love those so much!
