Not yet (I don't fly) but I've earned enough green points over the last 14 months to sail to New York and I have cousins in Canada so it'd be good to see them while I'm there. Might even bump into some of these women who are the best. :P
My great granddad sailed to New York in 1912 and I love the idea of following in his footsteps exactly a century on. And the romance of seeing the Statue of Liberty appear in the distance and seeing so much that is familiar despite me never having been there.
As for green points, it's just a personal tally I keep. When I've done enough that isn't harmful, I get a treat. I've never driven, never flown, and haven't used any form of motorised transport for 15 months (walked absolutely everywhere). I think I've earned a ferry ride by now. I want to cross on the Queen Mary 2. Sailing into New York harbour on the flagship Cunard liner thrills me. And if I can wangle a full month off work, I get a week cruising there, two weeks in America, and a week cruising back. I just need to find the money!
Green points eh, hmmmm..... I like it.
I like to ride my bike to work, but in Canada there is a lot of space so to speak, so walking would take a long time. They are getting better with the transit system, but Europe is so much more advanced and environmentally conscious in that regard.
I would say that you have earned your free ride and some! Your plan sounds awesome, I can see that your really excited. Though I have never been to New York, everyone that has went says its pretty amazing, especially in the Summer and Fall. I think you should do it and blog about it, with pictures etc.
As for the money, well don’t buy a money tree.... it doesn’t work (I have one, and well..... very disappointing lol - looks pretty though). Maybe see if you can do an exchange, there is this thing that I heard of where people switch apartments from different cities - I don’t know the site off hand, nor if it is safe lol, but its something. Perhaps soon is the time with the economy the way it is, it may not be so expensive. Or you could couch surf......
What time is it there right now? It's 9:40am here.
It wouldn't have been possible to walk everywhere where I used to live and I know people would find it difficult if it was imposed on them suddenly but I made a deliberate choice of location when I moved. Twenty minutes walk from work (too close to justify a bus, and far enough away to give me 40 minutes of walking every day). I'm two minutes from shops, and 20 minutes from the city centre. It's possible to walk everywhere if you make it a consideration when you move house. I just got lucky that I got an amazing place (I live in a church) in the right location.
Hehe, did my excitement come across? I was trying to tone it down (I've been boring people with it) but I'm more excited about this than anything since I was kid. The crossings get in at 7am so I've got to do it at a time of year when it's light at 7am. I like the idea of it being just after dawn and seeing it all with fresh light.
I like the idea of a blog! I keep a blog anyway, but I'd like a special one just for this trip because it's probably going to be a "once in a lifetime" thing for me.
3:10pm here. I think I've got five hours on you, which sounds about right. And it's so windy and rainy, I'm watching a poor magpie struggling not to be blown off a building. :)
Wow, you live in a church, that’s pretty cool. I've always been fascinated with churches for some reason and grave yards (strange I know). I wish I lived in close proximity to everything. You are right about the 20 minute thing, it is too close to justify waiting for a bus and ridiculous to drive a car (from my understanding, it’s kind of crazy to even own a car over there due to traffic congestion).
I think it’s wonderful that you are excited about your trip! So many people don’t let themselves get excited because they are scared to be disappointed (guilty). I hope that it is everything you dream of and more. The very fact that you know that you will be arriving @ 7am tells me that you have planned this trip for a long time. I love it when the dawn comes up over the water and there is this fog that looks more like smoke dimming the sunrise ever so slightly, outlining the city in a dreamy sort of state. From my experiences it’s the forest though lol.
Its bright and sunny, absolutely spectacular day here today!
Poor Magpie - bet he is squawking something fierce.
It's pretty amazing. In the hallway there's a stained glass window that is something like 80 feet high and I have gargoyles looking in at my bedroom window when I wake up. Whenever I get a takeaway, the driver's face is a picture. And the next time they come, they bring every other driver with them, just to show them what it looks like.
In a way, I've been planning the trip all my life. I know it's probably still a year away but my stomach flips upside down whenever I think about it. :D
Girls should make the first move ?
