I know a lot of people who have broken up with their long term partners during their first year of university/college/whatever. It's not just the distance, it's the fact that both of you will meet new people and have new experiences, and that will change you. What you want from a relationship will change. Even if the relationship you are in is perfect for you now it might not be perfect once you change.
Some people do stay together though, if you're both determined to and you know what you want. I'm not saying to expect the worst :)
