When I went to college my boyfriend stayed in our hometown. At the time I was just so excited to be going that I didn't realize how far apart we would be (about 9 hours). He was really sad and all but I was experiencing new things and didn't suffer as much as you say you are. We were together for 3 years like that, seeing each other every 2 weeks. It can work, as long as both of you have the intention of actually staying together. You have to work on it and keep things in perspective. It may take a lot of effort and patience but it's possible.
