Ok, so I voted it's not normal, because of the part where you said, "I made him take it out before we had sex." My thoughts on it are...Why did you have sex with him? Clearly you have different tastes and piercings are usually a form of a person's identity. So by you becoming so freaked out over this makes me believe that there are other aspects of his identity that you won't be able to identify with and your relationship will probably end. Or you can face your fear and accept his piercing as part of his identity and allow it to stimulate you the next time you have sex as a sign of acceptance.
My wife has some tattoos that I would not have, but I had to accept them because I love her.
You seriously connect piercings with identity? Piercings can be taken out very easily. And tattoos are pretty much permanent, not like piercings, Do you not have anything pierced? Not the same at all. If he said that he must keep it in and no other way around it, I would agree we are not a match. But he felt no insult to taking it out.
Yes, everything we do is apart of our identity from our clothing to our haircut. A piercing is as much of our identity as the other things we do, if not more so because of the pain that it takes to get it done and the scare that it leaves.
Genital piercings scare me

Good luck and best wishes.
