Friend reselling a gift you gave them?

It's possible that I might've misunderstood, and I understand that once you gift someone something, it is no longer yours. However, I still can't help but feel a bit disheartened.

Have you had any experiences like this before?

Someone returning or reselling a gift doesn't bother me. Everyone has different tastes and if they don't like what I give them, they have a right to get rid of it. XD

    • I think you're right, but I'd feel disheartened and embarrassed if someone sold my gift because it was the wrong thing.

    • I didn't think of it that way, thank you.

I think the kids should get presents. When adults exchange junk, er, "gifts" it is usually out of obligation.

The good thing about unwanted gifts is that they sometimes eventually find their way to thrift stores and some cheap-ass bargain hunter like myself may find it, buy it, and be happy with it.

If I like the gift, I keep it. If I don't, I give it away. Recently, I got an expensive watch from my aunt, but it isn't my taste. She would probably be disapointed if she knew I have plans to sell it. I would never let her find out...I'm not sure how your friend let you find out :O

I think most people would be hurt by that if they had put a lot of time and effort in to finding a gift they thought would be appreciated. It calls into question your taste and how well you understand the person you're giving the gift to.

But, in the end, the recipients of gifts are free to do whatever they like with them: stick them in the attic never to be seen again, chuck them in the trash, or sell them.

At least you know you're not likely to find it being gifted back to you. That really is tacky and downright rude.

In general, gifts are a nuisance. Everyone in the first world already has everything they want.

I wouldn't mind if someone returned a gift I gave them, but reselling it bothers me,like if it's right after. I find it unsettling.

  • Depends on the gift. If its something I specially sourced or made and spent a lot of time/money on then I'd be pissed. However most of my gifts these days are formulaic shit I buy at last minute. Maybe its where I live but we rarely buy big or expensive stuff for people on christmas or even birthdays.
