Racism, white, black, or not; that really doesn't matter in this situation. What your friend did was test your personal boundaries, and what you failed to do was say something sooner or ask questions when first mentioned. Laughing at the word the first few times and dismissing it the next (even when you were clearly uncomfortable) gave him the OK to use it more flagrantly. Why? Because some people are fucked up like that or just socially awkward/inappropriate.
What you need to do is tell him that he's using that word too much, and ask him to stop or at least chill.
