No, it's not normal behavior, though not every white person acts this way. In fact, I think it's safe to say the majority don't.
Ask him how he would feel if you'd call him a cracker everyday, or if he belongs to some negative white stereotype. Would he like it? Probably not.
I don't think you should be friends with this person, but for now, take it as a lesson to put rude people in their place.
