For an author to treat their characters as though they are real people?

Several of my author friends and I do this. After writing a certain character for a long enough time, they become developed enough that they can be treated as their own people with thoughts and opinions of their own - the only complication being that we are the only ones who have access to them. Holding full conversations with those characters becomes quite easy.

Do other authors do this, or is this just a special kind of crazy my friends and I share?

It's normal, as a writer I feel like my characters become real people to an extent. 'Holding full conversations' is the part of this post that can become kind of tricky as I've never personally done it myself.
