  • I'd say following a team gives me a tribal identity that it's not easy to find elsewhere in modern life. It gives me a way of instantly bonding in a pub with a stranger. I have friends solely because we follow the same team and met because we were in the same place one time, watching that team. It gives me hope, it gives me joy, it gives me a break from having to think about work, and the bills, and whether I'll ever get married. Call it mindless and I won't disagree but sometimes I don't want to think. Sometimes I want to feel.

I can be hurt in a relationship, my friends can let me down, my family can disown me, I could be living in a gutter. I still have my team. For my whole life, I will have my team. It won't die or leave me or cheat on me. And once in a blue moon, like 25th May 2005, my team will be directly responsible for the best day of my life so far.

If you want to take that away from people, fine, but before you do you'd better find something pretty fucking marvelous to replace it with.

    • Harder to stand on your own two feet and create something, ignoring the critics, like great artists do all the time. Tribal is easier and dumber, fitting the vast majority of people.
