Sometimes I do it everyday, sometimes every other day, and sometimes never for several weeks, but every so often I'd do it four times a day. And most of the time it's three consecutive events. What is the explanation for this? I'm sure it's not because I haven't done it for quite awhile because it can happen any day even days that I masturbated the day before.

Dude, it depends on what you see feel etc. on that day. If you are driving in your car when you see an environmental group of girls that are naked covering their bodies in "SAVE THE EARTH" posters then the posters get blown away then you'll masturbate about 6-9 times that day. If you are kidnapped and tied up on a post then you might not. If none of this happens any time in your life then you just don't feel like it on some days.
