Feeling Like You Lost Out On Your Youth

Hi I am a male 38 years old. I lived a sheltered life in a small town. When I was 22 I moved to the other side of the country as there was no opportunities in the small town I lived in. Living on my own in a big city I had little money and I had to do what I could to survive and make ends meet. Now that I am almost 40 I feel sad that I lost my youth. Everyone I speak to has these wild fun stories of crazy and fun things they did in their youth and I never got to experience any of those things. It makes me real depressed. Is this normal?

  • Yeah I lost my youth to drugs but it's important to learn self acceptance, forgive yourself, understand why things happened the way they did and then move on and focus on the future.

    • I read your comment and thought what a stupid thing to say, but then I saw the word neckbeard, and I just had to laugh my ass off. The word neckbeard incites the kind of laughing that can unconstipate a person.

      ROTFLMAO!!!

      • I am a proud wearer of my neck beard and my upbringing in Neckbeards fashion. We did not do things in real life but we still had a childhood lol :D

  • Go hitchhike someplace, drink, do coke, smoke weed. You're never to old to enjoy life. Your problem stems from trying to fit into society's expectations of working and contributing to a failing system. Don't be a slave.

  • This is not normal, I can't understand why everyone is agreeing. But just to share my perspective, If your weren't depressed you wouldn't think like that.

  • I agree. You're issue isn't with moving out of the small town, it's not taking chances once you were gone. I also grew up in as small town, but moved right after college. There, as most places like that, people either get out early or are lifers. The lifers may have more small-town, never left home stories, but you have them, too. Moving to a bigger area, new experiences, new people (as opposed to the same townspeople you grew up with every damn day).

You wished you were more daring and lived more in the bigger area, which is perfectly normal. Go make new memories now.

  • You regret not having more courage. Be braver.
