Quite honestly, most who have such strong homophobic feelings, have them because subconsciously they fear that they themselves may be gay. By being in close proximity to gays, they are afraid that they may not be able to control their gay urges, and this makes them very, very uncomfortable, often blaming the gay person for their being uncomfortable.
