I did when I was a kid but it never stopped me from swimming. My friends and I would dare each other to go down and touch the drain cover.
In our neighborhood though I never understood why there was a drain because they would not empty the pool til it was time to re-open it in late spring and only then did they drain it, using a sump pump and letting the water flow close to a storm drain.
