  • The law (in civilised parts of the world, anyway) says that parents are legally responsible for the care of their children until they reach the age when they're considered adults. In most places, one of those parental responsibilities is ensuring that children receive education, however that's defined locally.

I have no idea what the rules are for declaring parents unfit where you live, but in most places, this isn't something the authorities do lightly and children are only taken away from their parents when there's a very good reason.

In families where the parents are such useless and clueless clots that they should never have had children in the first place, it's not unusual for older siblings to take on the responsibility of acting in a parental role. It's also not unusual for children who take on this job to feel inadequate and guilty when they get things wrong. But this is hardly surprising, since they're only kids themselves. What's more, they're kids who have grown up with parents who are incapable of modelling good parenting skills, so they haven't learned how to behave in that role by absorbing things from their parents.

Almost always, we can all do a better job of whatever it is we're trying to do. Nobody's perfect, and nobody gets everything right all of the time. But the fact is that you are your sister's sibling, not her parent, and so you are not responsible for what has happened with her. It's also a fact that, no matter how hard you try, you are not going to be able to make everything right with your family all on your own. You're not going to be able to make your parents better people or better parents. If you insist on believing that you could do this if you tried hard enough, the only result is going to be that you'll end up feeling even shittier about yourself.
