  • the thing is though, a lot of shows try to take on social, cultural and political issues in hopes to get more ratings because they are being conterversial and 'making a statement'. i wont lie though in the case of south park i think they bring up really good points and execute an episode really well based on that point, but not in a realistic way (its way over dramatised and charactors change their minds or die or whatever just for convenience, that sort of thing)

however, the simpsons is more about family values and morality (the first seasons anyways) and all that good stuff you never see on tv anymore, yet it was still a good show for adults too. im not always in the mood to think about very important issues in the world when im watching a cartoon. A lot of shows do that and its not something different or interesting, as opposed to the simpsons, which i feel brings to television a sense of family and everyday problems. what other show does that? everybody loves raymond? the big bang theory? sorry to say but most shows on tv are just so stupid.

besides, what i meant by shallow is that in south park it seems their charactors or their points of views change just to suit whats going on, not to mention the death of kenny in every episode lol. just little things like that. with the simpsons you almost feel as though they are real people. i mean i never feel empathy for any south park or family guy charactor

    • I detinitely wouldn't put Family Guy in the same league. It's funny but I don't think it really takes on social issues. It takes more of an aim at pop culture.

There are a few newer shows that deal with family values etc. One great example is "Modern Family". I think that is a fantastic show. It is funny, smart, and has a good heart.

      • Modern family is too liberal for my taste lol if it was called 'old fashioned family' then maybe i would like it

        • I'm definitely not a liberal when it comes to economic issues, but I probably am when it comes to social issues like gay marriage, drugs, etc. I guess you could say I have libertarian views.

I will say that to a degree Modern Family has changed my views of gay people and gay people raising children. I think this show does have some social importance. It probably isn't to the extent of All In The Family back in the '70s, but it is there.

Tim Allen's new show "Last Man Standing" might be more to your taste. It is also a funny family sitcom with a good heart. It is no "Home Improvement", but it is pretty good.

          • well i am a libertarian, and i dont think libertarians have liberal views on gay marriage, drugs etc.? are you australian? because i heard australians call right wingers 'liberal'.

the part about modern family thats the worst is the gay couple, im really against them raising kids...but im not complaining, im just not going to watch the show.

tim allen was never funny to me. lol now i sound like i hate everything on tv...the shows i do like are curb your enthusiasm, sienfeld, married with children, roseanne, hmm well come to think of it i like all the old shows from the 80s and 90s, i rarely watch any new shows on tv

            • Not Australian...I believe the official US Libertarian party stance is that government has no business in marriage therefore it doesn't really take a stand on it either way. This does of course open it up to being legal. The same goes from drugs etc.

              • well thats not liberal then.
i definatly agree that these types of things are none of the governments business so drugs should be legal. and when it comes to marriage, it should be based on religion and the bible which shouldnt have anything to do with politics either but that would mean gay marriage would not be allowed.
