I drank very occasionally when pregnant like parties and anniversaries. But only one drink at a time. I think you may be describing drinking more than is recommended. But a lot of women drink, smoke and their kids are fine, and a lot of women do everything " right" and have major problems. I'd say if you don't feel right about it, don't do it. You won't be pregnant forever.
Doctors are divided on whether a small amount of alcohol during pregnancy is OK or not. Apparently around 25% of women drink while pregnant. So I'd say that qualifies as "normal". But the amount you describe is a bit much in my non-expert opinion. I've heard a drink or two per week suggested as a "probably safe" level.
What country are you from?
If you're from the USA, how can you not have seen this warning:
"GOVERNMENT WARNING:
(1) According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects.
(2) Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may cause health problems."
I'm not from the USA, but I live near it so I see it everytime I run past the duty free shops at the border.
My grandmother admits to drinking and smoking like normal while she was pregnant with my Mom, and my Mom is fine, but of course there is a lot of evidence that alcohol can harm a fetus. Some studies have shown that a small amount of alcohol may be ok.
So, I'd say you aren't guaranteed to be harming your baby, but to be safe you should at least cut back.
People get so uptight about this shit but reality is, it takes extreme amounts of alcohol on a consistent basis to harm a fetus and even then it's not a given that the baby will be harmed. Doctors just cover their asses by saying no amount of alcohol is safe because we simply do not know how much is too much and why some babies born to alcoholics are normal and some aren't. Drinking occasionally, even getting hammered once in a while, is fucking fiiiiiiiine.
Proof?
I knew a boy with very mild FAS, he was just a little slow mentally. His mother drank a lot every single day. She was obese and did not know she was pregnant with him until she went into labor. I knew him from the age of 12 until he died in a car wreck as a young man.
There are degrees of FAS, ranging from very mild to totally disabled and needing fulltime care. My understanding is that malnourished potential mothers who also drink a lot are more likely to have a severely affected FAS child, so that could be why the person you knew was only mildly affected.
One of the huge problems is that FAS people often also drink a lot and produce more FAS babies. The first time I heard about it was in an autobiography about FAS in Native American communities, but it's also common in Australian Aboriginal communities.
The worst time to drink is very early in the pregnancy, often before the woman even knows she's pregnant: it's just not worth the risk
I haven't checked any labeled diagrams lately either. I thought what a clit is, what a vagina is, and where babies come from was all common knowledge for anyone above the age of 14.
The idea that an adult would need to consult a chart for that information is amazing to me.
