Does the military really protect our freedoms?

I know this is long but please read it. Then vote and comment. Thank you.- Signed, OP

Or do they just get killed and kill other people? Are our freedoms really protected or is it all just a lie? People always tell you to respect them and show them gratitude but is any military really worth that much praise and adoration? Maybe our freedoms CAN'T be protected because they're always overseas fighting for oil and trying to solve conflict. That or they thrive on it and cause it in the first place. If they're not the real heroes, then who is? It can't be the Police (because they're KNOWN to screw up peoples' lives and cause grief, even to those who are innocent and never did anything wrong. The police taint their badges 70%-90% of the time because most of them are Power-Angry Neanderthals who should be on a I'm-Going-To-Fire-You-And-Strip-You-Of-Your-Badge-So-You-Can't-Be-A-Power-Abusing-Dickface-Anymore list and no I never committed a crime in my life so don't go saying "Well, most people deserve it, including you, OP"). The firemen and women perhaps? The mailman? Superman? Batman? The Toxic Avenger? IDK. But if we can't trust our own Government, Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, Police Force, FBI, and CIA to protect us and our best interests then who CAN we trust? Each other? That's not really likely considering how much Men and Women hate each other and give each other hell everyday (People can't even get along with people that are the same sex as them). Bigotry, Racism, Violence, Theft, and other problems like these are rampant in our society. We can't even trust each other to protect what we all want: Freedom and Peace. I guess the only person that people can trust without a doubt to protect them is their ownselves (But even that won't work if there's self-hate going on). In times like these, it's like it'd all be better if everyone just spilt apart and made their own 1-Person community and never associated with anyone else again except maybe for Importing and Exporting goods. Then again, if everyone decided to live alone like that, they could learn to survive as Hermits and never need anything again from anybody.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • A military does the bidding of the government. Most governments today (including ours) are much more interested in enriching those in power and their colleagues than the freedoms of the general populous.
In the last 14 years many of the the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution and Bill of Rights have been taken away from the American people under the guise of "homeland security". It is unlikely these freedoms will ever be restored and no one seems to care.
So, if you are asking me, "Does the military really protect our freedoms", my answer would have to be a resounding, NO!

    • But the government that we have is a reflection of the will of the people. The military does do the bidding of the government, but by extension that is also the bidding of the people.

      • Do you honestly believe your representatives in congress are representing you, or are they representing the big money corporations and individuals that paid the big bucks to support their election campaigns? They conned you into voting for them, telling you just what you wanted to hear, but never had any intention of representing the majority that actually elected them.
There may actually be a couple of first term politicians out there, that believe in the system, but the majority are in it for the money, honey. That is "The American Way".

        • I believe it is far too easy to write our politicians off as corrupt and then blame the corruption for all of our problems. It is a given that with all positions of power there is some level of corruption that goes along with it, but that is not to say that politicians are all self-serving bastards and are actively working against the wills of the people either.

Every politician that you talk to will tell you that they are in this business to serve the people who put them there. Of course it would be naive to take such a remark at face value, but ultimately I believe that people are inherently good, and that at worst some of these people care some of the time, and at best some of these people care all of the time.

          • It was never the intention of the founding fathers that our politicians would be career politicians. The intent was for them to do their 4 or 8 years, then return to their former lives, to prevent exactly this very thing that is destroying America today.
The system is broken, possibly beyond repair and there are many who can not see it.
It is a harsh reality that few, if any of today's politicians, care at all about what is best for their constituents. Point in fact; While over 60% of the American people were in favor of stem cell research, Bush steadfastly refused to allow it because of his own personal beliefs. He was not elected to consider his own personal beliefs; he was elected to carry out the will of the people. Just like a judge, a politician should be impartial; a vehicle for his constituency.
If the president can't be trusted to carry out his mandate, then why would you think lesser politicians would?
Obama promised to change Washington (remember "Yes we can"?), empty Gitmo and numerous other things which he hasn't come close to doing, even when he had both houses of congress on his side. He had an opportunity to become a truly great president, known for doing great things, but he will only be remembered historically as America's first black president, because he was more interested in a second term than in honoring his promises. He has turned into just another Washington politician and sadly, a spineless bastard. He screwed everyone who supported him.
I'm very sorry, but I see no underlying goodness in any of the elected officials in this country. Some might try, for a little while, but eventually this system wears them down and they either quit public service or join the corrupt and broken system.

            • There are many things wrong with your statements here, and I see it echos the typical ill-informed talking points that are pervasive on the internet.

First, you can go right down the list of well known statesman of the time, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, etc., and these were not people who faded back into obscurity after serving a few years. Their role in government was life-long. It is absurd to suggest that they wanted a revolving door for congress. And besides, if the people are happy with their congressmen, why should they not be allowed to continue to vote them into service?

Secondly, we are a representative government, not a direct democracy. It is not required that every action be checked against the will of the people directly, in real time. Politicians are not meant to be "impartial" or just a "vehicle" - as representatives they have a lot of latitude for how they wish to accomplish their agenda. As far as Bush and his opposition to stem cell research, this was actually a critical part of Obama's platform in 2008 and helped him secure the Presidency. Piss people off, and the next guy gets a chance to clean up your mess. The system worked as designed.

Obama promised to close Gitmo, but his power is not unlimited. He certainly tried early in his Presidency to do it, but congress had other plans. The people have the power to vote out all of these congressmen who oppose the closing of Gitmo, but they chose not to. This is not a failure of Obama or congress. The system is working as designed.

  • Its meant to protect us from other countries taking over. Though we still have to listen to the government. However in some countries they do mandatory circumcisions on fully aware adults and chop off your hands for stealing. I don't steal but that is pretty brutal and I would rather not live under that ruling.

    • When I visited Saudi Arabia (one of those places where they lop off a hand for stealing) not one person, child or adult, would touch our Zodiac when we left it on the beach, to visit ashore. In most other places, including every island in the Caribbean, it must be locked up, and frequently the children will play in it. This may not sound like a big deal to you, but our Zodiac is our ONLY transportation from our anchored boat to shore and being inflatable, is quite easy to puncture. Patching any holes in them is a very iffy proposition; it rarely works well. Never mind that the Zodiac is a us$6,000.00+ investment, a big chunk of change for most of us who cruise.
I, for one, am all in favor of lopping off the hand of a thief.

  • All you need to know is that the government has no intention of sending soldiers off to 'fight for our country', the war in Afghanistan for example, it is unlawful. The law states that a war should only commence if a country is protecting itself from being attacked. America and the UK have sent their troups over to Afghanistan, entirely unprovoked, to attack and bomb thousands of innocent families including small children, babies etc. All the governments care about is getting resources such as oil and making money.
this is also why many parts of Africa and Asia are kept as third world countries, because without any money or education, they have no chance of protecting themselves and stopping other countries coming along and just taking all their resources for nothing.

  • The military protects our interests, which is an indirect way of protecting our freedoms. They do it from a high level, legal sort of way starting with certain changes made to our society as a result of the civil war.

  • In the uk most of our military are used abroad in other theatres of war and conflict .They are rarely used to protect us citizens . That task seems to be left to the police force who to be honest are not geared up to quell the violent demonstrations that are becoming more and more apparent here in England (notice I say England and not Britain . Britain consists of cross border immigrants from all the ratholes in Europe . England , like wales and Scotland and Ireland are are the lands of the indigenous peoples of these islands ......sorry folks but That's white Anglo Saxon .
Visitors are welcome tho) England like many of those countries that form the British Islands has became. A war zone for anyone who wants to come here and threaten our way of life . What we need is to bring our troops back to our home shores let's have a proper homeland security , a ring of steel to stop all these foreign crazies , and some home grown ones from getting in . Let's forget about trying to bring democracy to places where we all know it will fade away the minute we turn our backs . Let's keep the insurgents out of our back yards .
The Police (God luv em ) spend the vast majority of their time being paid overtime rates when there is a kick off on home soil .....they love it and you can't blame them . But how can you do your job properly when you have political correctness. Like the police watchdog whining about how hard you have beat the shit out of a machete wielding thug .
No I don't think the military protect us ....but they would if this millionaire bunch of cronies we call a government would let them .....bring back Oliver Cromwell

    • I'm with you, mate. When diplomacy fails, parliament doesn't need to start a war. MI6 operatives can clandestinely take out some high threat targets with precision weapons. This encourages foreign diplomats to visit the British embassy and be reasonable.

  • In your post you basically admit that without a military we would all just be hermits living alone, trading goods amongst each other.

The third-world tribes in Africa live that way. I don't want to live that way.

So by your own admission, yes the military is protecting our current way of life.

  • Not really. Theoretically they could prevent Exwyezeestan from invading, conquering and enslaving us all. I'm sure if that actually came up they would rise to the occasion and "keep us free", but it's difficult to imagine this situation this will happen.

Two reasons: One (regarding my country, the US in particular), it's really big and civilians have lots of guns. Even without the military even without the military, a hypothetical invaders would have a hell of a time taking over by force.

And two, countries really don't go around enslaving everybody that much anymore. I'm not completely sure why. But it seems to be so. Much more likely you just become citizens of the conquering country. Doubtless there would be a rough period, and maybe the new government is little worse than the conquered one, or it might be a little better. But at the end of the day one country is pretty much the same as another.
