I suspect that after a couple months the fetus's eyes start to work and it can see what is happening. So if the fetus is born safely and grows into a baby, don't be surprised if the baby has nightmares because of what it saw while in its mother.
The baby is safe from this sight. Obviously there isn't a huge hole throughout... before the cervix there is another quite small whole that the baby will be birthed through, too small to see much through it. I asked my doctor.
Does sex harm the baby when your pregnant?
