Well, if you want the readers of your story to actually like it, I recommend you do your research because chances are, someone might know what you're writing about and if it's wrong, the story is killed. At least, that's what happens to me. For example, I read a story about someone who is diabetic like myself. The author did get the details of that right or else I would've completely lost interest in the story.
