Does freedom really exist?

  • This is very subjective.

Some people are free, but in their heads they live like slaves, and vice versa.

For me freedom would be having enough money to not have to worry about a thing. I would be able to afford a big house, and be able to take care of my elderly parents, and help my sister. Freedom for me would be largely financial. If I had the kind of money I would like then I could not only have certain amenities and luxuries, but I could also afford to hire a housekeeper and cook/chef for my folks and a personal trainer for me.

    • Sorry, but your ideas of freedom and money just don't add up. Being in the elite 1% is hardly being free. To maintain our level of wealth, we must invest so that the plebeian 99% can create wealth more efficiently. In other words, it is our job to give you a job. If you are miserable doing it, you have the freedom live on public assistance. We don't care about you.

Yes, much is expected from the super-wealthy and if we don't deliver, we will lose our fortunes. In exchange for our efforts, we get "privilege", eg. Caribbean golf outings, fine dining five nights a week, exclusive fitness facilities, exotic vacations, and that sort of thing. We are no more free than you. Just more complete, self-actualized people.

      • Um...no. You're actually completely wrong. You don't have to invest and you aren't required to do anything with your wealth. Investments return yield higher than the initial investment, that's why they call them investments, if they were just so poor people could make money they would call it charity. My guess is that you're another average idiot trying to play off being rich because actual rich people fully understand that wealth comes from hard work and they don't blame normal people for consuming part of their wealth or taking up their time. They understand that businesses are built through the employees and an employees hard work and dedication is what gives them the quality to sell their product or service.

Self-important entitled douche bags who were born with daddies money though...yeah...that's about where you're at IF you have any money at all.

        • The point we are both ignoring is that the third generation of inherited wealth has problems. They are lazy snobs that don't care what their parents and grandparents have built. This generation are often worthless and entitled destroyers of wealth.

I am speaking for the 1%. Your comment seems more directed to the .01%.

    • Ever hear the saying "to whom much is given, much is required."?

Money and material things are burdensome. They require upkeep, attention and hard work to keep them.

It's a nice dream but ask anyone with a lot of money if they are free.

Having all that staff you mention requires you to manage them. Hire a manager but they still need to be looked over. If not they will rob you blind and rocket you to the poorhouse again.

      • Well, it sounds like more fun than OP's idea of freedom to me.

I could manage staff, or get my sister to do it. She ran her own modeling agency for ten years, so I know she's ethical.

I think you just have a negative view of money and material things.

        • I probably do have a negative view of money. I won't argue that.

        • I think that we are free and we are not free. What I mean by that is that if you want certain things in life, services, material possessions, or homes that cost money, you can't just get them, you have to work for them. And not everybody is going to be able to achieve a job which pays six figures a year. And when they do, the amount of time they need to spend devoted to work and not just being able to do what they want when they want becomes a large percentage of their time. And if they can't get a job like that, they won't be able to afford the services, material things, or homes that they wish. So in that sense, we are definitely not free. Only the few exceptional people who've inherited an incredibly large amount of money would really be free in that sense.
In another sense, we are all free, unless you're incarcerated. We're all free what career path to choose, what job to look for, what school to go to, you're free to choose either school, vocational training, or just look for a job, you're free to try and start your own business and make it take off too. You are free to choose where ever you want to live (as long as you can afford it), and if we wanted, we could roam the country freely and wander around, not have to report back anywhere, can sleep where we want, eat what you want, don't have to have anywhere you'd have to go back to, and you can do it all legally (as long as you're not wandering onto someone's farm property).
