Does anyone else hunt rats to eat?

It's great. No bag limits, because they're vermin. Pretty easy targets since they mostly hang out around the dumpster, which is makes them pretty easy to get. Also, they're pretty easy to trap, also no limits or regulations on trapping.

Overall, it's one of the few areas of hunting where there aren't really any restrictions. They pretty much just drop right away too, so no following a blood trail. Don't need to go applying for a gun license or anything either, since all you need is a BB gun since they're so little.

So, yeah, rat hunting is pretty awesome. Preparing it is pretty easy too, it's sort of like filleting fish in a way since they're small. And in my experience, it's absolutely delicious. It's important to get all the skin off and then give the meat a good rinse since the hair is disgusting, but the meat itself.... all I can say is WOW!

Honestly, I'm really surprised that eating rats isn't more popular. It just is so delicious. Sometimes, it's pretty thin, so it cooks pretty fast. But some of the ones from the dumpster lately are pretty meaty, and some of them have more meat than you'd expect.

Though, occasionally they are rather bony and filleting them can be a bit more time consuming and difficult because you have to cut the little strips of meat from the bones. But usually, I haven't gotten any of these duds lately. Because the ones in the dumpster seem to be getting fatter. Even when I do get those, they can go great in rice or any other dish that tastes good with a small amount of meat after I finely chop the little strips.

The taste is just different, but more delicious than anything I have ever eaten. I'm not quite sure how to describe it. It's very rich, very flavorful, and rather gamy. But in a good way. Kind of like lamb, if you've ever had that. But better.

And my cat loves the heads, so I usually save those and use them as treats. People can't eat those though, because they're just too bony . I've had pork brains before, just the canned ones from the supermarket, but rat brain is a bit different. Kind of a weird taste, can't exactly describe it. I didn't like it though, but I guess you could eat it if you crack the skull with a nutcracker and scoop it out. But I don't really like it.

The meat itself is AMAZING though, and honestly I don't know why this isn't more popular. Honestly, rat would probably pass for 5 star cuisine. On only one condition, that people didn't know it was rat. I don't understand why, but for some reason people act all grossed out when I tell them this. But like I said, I really don't get why. Rat hunting is awesome!

It's a cultural thing. In some places, rat and similar rodents are considered perfectly normal food. I'm sure I would eat rat if I was literally starving, but I don't even like picking chicken off the bone, so I'd never eat rat out of choice or curiosity.

If the meat of a healthy rat is thoroughly cooked, it's probably fine as far as bacteria, viruses, and parasites are concerned.

However, you're clearly eating rats that live in an urban environment, and so I think you're dicing with death when you eat them. Lots of places put out poisoned bait to control the rat population. Usually this is a blood thinner that kills the rats by internal haemorrhaging after a few days. The stuff used by professional exterminators is pretty potent, and the manufacturers direct them to use gloves when handling the poison bait so the active ingredient isn't absorbed through their skin.

Rats that are still running (or staggering) around after eating this stuff will have it in their blood and therefore their muscle tissue, and then you'll have it in you after you eat the rat. I'm sure eating one poisoned rat won't kill you, but it sounds like you're feasting on the things, and so you might get a cumulative dose that causes problems for you.

One very popular anticoagulant rodenticide has a half-life of months in the body (basically, it takes a very long time for the body to deal with the toxin and excrete it), and consuming more and more tiny doses will result in you accumulating more and more in your body.

If you insist on eating rats, it might be wise to look into this, so you understand the risks you're running, the possible long-term consequences for your health, and the sort of treatment you'll need if you are ever diagnosed with anticoagulant poisoning. If you live in one of those barbaric places where you have to pay through the nose for life-saving medical treatment, then you need to consider the possible financial consequences of your hobby too.

Oh, and the same applies to your cat, only more so, since it has a much smaller body-mass, and so needs to eat much less rat meat in order to accumulate a deadly dose of anticoagulant.

Good survival technique, I wouldnt do it. I would just kill them for the insignificant kill, not for the food. If the apocalypse happens hell yeah I would eat a rat, but in an apocalypse the rat population will sharply decrease due to less humans therefore less scraps to eat.

I used to keep fancy domestic rats as pets so I could never eat rats.
