Health is WAY more important than looks. If you're sedentary and feeding yourself junk, it doesn't matter what size you are; you're headed for some real misery later in life.
Forget about trying to lose weight. Aim for being healthier. Plenty of people who have a BMI that would characterize them as overweight eat well and get enough exercise to stay healthy.
I used to be a good bit heavier than I currently am and dropped about 60 pounds. I'm still technically overweight, but I am vastly healthier thanks to yoga, walking and cutting out the crappy junk food. Do you remember running and playing as a kid? Did you dance or swim or see how high you could kick? How long has it been since you've done those things and just enjoyed moving? Don't give that stuff up for the sake of some Cheez-Its and ice cream.
In answer to your question, no, you don't have to lose weight. You should, however, gain health. In the process, you might lose some weight, but that isn't nearly as important as feeling good. You don't know until you shed those pounds how small your life gets as you get bigger. If you've ever chosen not to take a walk in the park or skip down the street because you're too heavy to do it comfortably, your weight is getting in the way of the rest of your life.
Don't let that happen. It feels so good to feel good.
Doctor says I'm "obese" but I feel okay. Should I lose weight?
