My girly was so good when we got her at 18 months old, but over the years, she got so protective of the ex man, and he just didnt correct it. She listens to me more now that he's not around, but its taken a lot of work.

For the most part though, I do trust an animals instinct. As long as I'm fairly sure it doesn't have issues..

That is the thing. You need to correct dogs when they are young. Yeah, sometimes dogs can turn on you and you don't know why but any animal can.
My sister has a dog. A white German shepherd. Very nice and well behaved dog.
