The most interesting studies about it are the ones conducted on identical twins, paternal twins, and adopted children. Basically, the twins show correlations between personality and environment, but the adopted children show a strong correlation between genetics and personality. It's really interesting stuff.
There's also a well-respected longitudinal study of personality that has been going on for the past fifty years and the results are showing that the Big Five personality traits stay fairly consistent over a lifetime.
