Oh Nature vs Nurture was my favorite topic at college it's really interesting. I believe its mainly nature but I think our surrounding still affect us. I think humans are like art on a canvass, when we are born we are sketched out in pencil, our basic personality traits, our nurological issues and how we react to stress, Then as we grow everything starts to get shaded in with our own personal colours, our fears, our experiences, our joy. Colour is always being added constantly changing the piscure but never removing the original sketches.
look at a feral child. the mannerisms of a feral child show great evidence that a lot of human "nature" is taught including speach.
seems to me that human nature is more like human culture but i should write a book about it instead of blabbering.
i disagree with you. but instead of comming up with a good rebuttle with some points in favor of nuture over nature i'm just going to call you a hippy! or maybe you went to art school or something but i dunno you're weird.
ahh whatever i'll spare one point. take a lion for example. it is in the lion's nature to hunt and kill. it makes the lions' personallity very agressive yet it does not attack any humans.
it doesn't need to. the humans feed it, and it is not in a lions' nature to be fed yet it still directly effects the personallity of the lion. no longer in need of hunting and killing the lion abandons his nature and thus nurture has conquored nature.
Both. I can't quite remember my textbook but I think temperament is the word for what you're born with, and personality develops from that.

Basically, temperament is innate characteristics.
hmm... most babies seem to be more or less the same to me.
i just remember being happy and naive once. now i'm just grumpy and naive.
Ehhh I work with kids. Babies are different. You can get one baby that is an absolute dream to look after, easy to settle, eats well, rarely cries, then the next baby along in that exact same family - screams bloody murder at the slightest little thing, won't sleep, fusses when they eat, insists on being held, etc etc.
Once medical reasons for child #2's behaviours are ruled out, that's put down to temperament. IE child #1 has an 'easy' temperament and child #2 has a 'difficult' temperament.
That's not to say that child #1 will be a ray of sunshine and child #2 will be a grumpy cunt their whole lives, just that child #1 will be more predispositioned to adjust well to situations etc.

The most interesting studies about it are the ones conducted on identical twins, paternal twins, and adopted children. Basically, the twins show correlations between personality and environment, but the adopted children show a strong correlation between genetics and personality. It's really interesting stuff.
There's also a well-respected longitudinal study of personality that has been going on for the past fifty years and the results are showing that the Big Five personality traits stay fairly consistent over a lifetime.
Ahh, nature nurture debate.
I have been told by numerous Professors that we are all born with a certain temperament, but our personality as a whole is shaped greatly by the particular set of genes we have and the triggers in our environment that bring them out.
Part of your personality is shaped by genetic factors, and part is shaped by environmental factors.
This is why some people who work in the social sciences, like to study identical twins separated at birth.
Also, there are some genetic traits that re-exhibit themselves, after skipping a generation, meaning your grandparents might have had these (dominant genes), but possibly not your parents (recessive genes).
I think both. I think you are born with some characteristics because of the way your brain is wired but you also learn a lot of things from your environment and it shapes you.
I was not this awesome when i hatched. I deserve an award for my accomplishment and I'm not even done yet.
Your personality stays relatively consistent, but your environment shapes your motivations which are likely to change over time depending on your experiences.
It's a mixture, but I'd say your environment shapes you more than genetics.
Born with the patience to put up with things you would like to learn and visa versa. Americas past time, baseball and football. my dad made me watch. I hate them. Hockey and MMA for me. My ex was molested and saw mother abused by drunk dad. She is an emotionally abusive drunk. I was molested and saw mother abused. I make sure no woman I know deals with that and my child has the best father anyone knows. Our actions are shaped by the thoughts only we possess. My friends imitate rap artists, I realized that I can be a better man. We had the same type of mothers which is why we were friends. Almost the same childhood. I used what I learned in life and applied them the way I wanted to
just because somone imitates rap culture makes them a total douchebag doesn't mean that you are "the better man" in fact you're probably not the better man for thinking you're so awesome.

imitate rap culture as in the hardcore, "I gotta sell drugs and join a gang and die" which a couple did in that order. We all had a choice. YES, we did. He really CHOSE to do those things because it was "cool". We don't live in a neighborhood where you have no other choice.
