Do you think whatever is meant to happen will happen?

i mean i always believed in this... however I do think that it is not necessarily all true. I think you have to help your future out.. i mean for ex. it will not happen that you will become a doctor if u sit at home on the couch watchin tv and drinkin beer instead of going to school... what do you think?

No. Things happen because something makes them happen. In example: A man doesn't get hit by a speeding drunk driver while crossing the road because it's "meant" to happen. He gets hit because the driver is drunk, and has no sense of what he's doing. It's all just cause and effect.

    • What is your name if you don't mind me asking?

*Edit: Whatever your name is, was there any cause for your name being what it is today and by which people identify you? i am asking this because i believe when the name by which the people know us or call us with, when that name is not in our hands to choose then how can anything else in the world be. Even the place we are born or the people we live our day-to-day life with. (Just a thought)

The cause was my parents wanting a name for their kid, and the effect was them giving me the name Kendall.
Simple as that. Though it can be be broken down even further into more cause and effect scenarios if I knew what methods they used to find the name.

There's a lot of cause and effect, but also a lot of randomness, too. Nothing happens "for a reason."

I agree. The idea of purpose is a human creation.

But the driver is drunk because the driver being drunk was meant to happen. You say the driver is only drunk because he drunk too much alcohol? The driver drinking too much alcohol was meant to happen. He only drunk too much because his friends persuaded him to? That peer pressure was meant to happen. You can trace it right back forever.

I can say the exact same thing about cause and effect. The cause was peer pressure, and the effect was, (I'll just call the person Guy from now on) Guy getting drunk. The cause was Guy being drunk, and the effect was him hitting someone. My cause and effect claim can be traced to forever as well. Also, I'm not undersaying your use of "meant". Are you implying there's some sort of premade map to everything, or are you saying that something made it that way? Or that everything happens for a reason? Clarify what you mean by "meant".

By 'meant', I mean there is a premade map to everything... only it's not PREmade, because that would imply it was made before anything happened, when in actual fact it was made outside of time itself.
I find it really hard to explain what I'm on about haha. Yes it is cause and effect, but because it did happen, it was MEANT to happen. Simply because it could not have happened any other way, because then we wouldn't be living in this world, we'd be living in an alternate reality, where that thing didn't happen. (I don't believe there actually are alternate realities, that's just theoretical.)
          Make sense?

That's cause and effect, not a set destiny.

No. Life is random. Why must there be a purpose to life? It is a human creation with no evidence.

What would determine the reasons, or the ends? You would need to believe in a higher-power, for which there is very little evidence to believe in.

    • May i know where did these thoughts come to your mind from and from when and also why?

They came from my mind, nothing else. Nothing has influenced them; at least not knowingly.

They came as soon as I read this poll.

It seems logical to me that if everything happens for a reason, there must be something, presumably a higher power, to determine the reason. That is why?

        • The series of questions can go on but i guess you have the reasons for where, when and why. And i think i have found the best answer to my poll which is the reply which you gave that made me think

1st point "It came to his mind, he did not think of it before until he had a reason"

2nd point "They came when he read the poll IT JUST HAPPENED (*IIN i was looking for an option to highlight this but couldn't*)

3rd point "He too just like every other person no matter how hard he tries can not think beyond the limits provided or should i say can not open the closed doors in our minds which we are prohibited from or i should say which are shown to us as it is what it is but it is not or whatever ...."

Anyways glad to have a word with you. Every reply in here was helpful and no offense with anyone if anyone felt so

If you think there's a reason for everything, then there's a reason for everything. If you don't, then there isn't a reason for anything.

well, yes and no. for example, when you're meant to live, if somebody or something tries to kill u, there will be something that prevents it. A lot of terrible things DO happen that causes pain and suffering (like rapes, suffering in fires, etc) which most likely hapoen bcuz suffering makes one grow as a person. Although it IS hard for us to determine that, living in this realm.

You may learn something or grow as a person because of suffering, but I don't think most events happen so they can cause growth. If you suffer from a fire and you grow as a person as a result of that fire, that doesn't mean the fire happened so you would grow as a person.

    I'm not sure...

I think life presents opportunities to you and it's your choice to take it and make it happen.

Of course there are people who make bad choices and that can affect others.

This is true. There's some randomness, but there's also a great amount of preparation and personal choices that affect all our lives. And there's some luck, which is the point at which preparation meets opportunity.

    • Anytime in your life did it happen to you that you had the choice and opportunity to choose but you did not.

I can't think of anything but sometimes something will happen and I feel like it was meant to happen for me. Either to help me or make me realize something.

For example, I'm taking a year off of college b/c I moved to a different state so I'm trying to figure out what I want to do. I don't work often or go out so I'm always going on the internet. I Googled something along the lines of Is it normal.... and found this website.

One poll I created I asked how many languages do you know? I was expecting most people to say 1 or 2 but most people knew 3 or more and 1 was the least chosen answer. Then I realized I'm missing out on something, being American, by only knowing one language. Now I have an idea of what I want to go to school for.

That might sound stupid XD but it just seems like some things are meant to happen. It could just be a coincidence but I don't believe so. :)

        • Glad to have genuine people like you on IIN to get replies from and yea even i found this website by googling something i don't remember the lines too but followed by "is it normal" and i am here.

And maybe i learnt from your answer that no matter what people say if they believe in it or not but they don't even have control on their minds as in what thoughts should come into it. for example you never had the thought of knowing how many languages people can speak until the thought came to your mind. The question is why it did not come to your mind before in your life. Maybe I guess cause it was now your time to realize which way you need to go in life. Which was meant to happen as someone who knows more than 2 languages wont find it interesting to learn a new one cause they wont be havin the same feeling as you do.

Now may be this might sound stupid but everytime these stupid things just keep going in my mind which make me believe it was meant to happen.
