Personally I suck at geography, but i think its important you consider not everyone has had the same experiences, such as a person who has never lived in a diverse area. Yes it is ignorant, but you are going to have to deal with people like that the rest of your life. I say you try to help them understand or just ignore it and move on. If you were talking about identifying people's backgrounds based on looks you could look into the Cross-Race-Effect.
