Do you think that you could ever teach children?

  • While earning a teaching degree, I had to work my way up, so to speak, starting with younger children to eventually get to university level. These are just my thoughts on teaching the different ages of students- each has its own pros and cons.

Primary school children tend to have the most behavioral issues, but their workload is much lighter and easiest to teach. In the younger grades, at least here, most schools have it set up so that one teacher has a homeroom and teaches every subject, which requires less organization but is pretty mundane.

Teenagers are the most difficult in my opinion. They've garnered a sense of independence by this point, not to mention peer pressure. Where in the younger grades there are usually a few troublemakers who can be easily reprimanded, those who still have that mindset have become much bigger and smarter, making them disruptive and hard to deal with. The work is obviously harder, but with a little one-on-one explanation it's usually not too bad.

College students are my favorite for a few reasons. Firstly, all the students want to be there- they want to learn the subject, where in every other level they usually don't have much choice. It's also stimulating because you only teach the one subject you're passionate about. There are relatively few behavioral issues, but most students do need extra help at some point.
