The baby is protected by both the amniotic sac and by a wad of mucus that forms. There are certain conditions where sex is inadvisable in the later stages of pregnancy but - in general - it's safe.
As for appropriateness, I see where you're going, but the baby couldn't possibly view this. There are cases where babies have responded to the mother's orgasms or perhaps endorphins. That raises its own little moral issue.
