I wouldn't say that their jobs are jokes, as the root of the problem for MANY is a chemical imbalance in the brain that can be corrected by boosting the right chemical to correct the imbalance. However, in many cases of mood disorders, the chemical dysfunction was either caused by or worsened by other factors.
In that case, the patient must make a lifestyle change to avoid the issues that are causing them the most problems, such as exercising, cutting out fast food and lowering their sugar intake, discontinuing friendships or family relations (the latter is an option many patients don't have) so they take the medication but don't commit to the lifestyle changes (as mental illnesses such as mood disorders often don't happen for NO reason) so the treatment fails. Often like the diet given to you by a nutritionist. The diet works but only as well as you work WITH it.
I've worked with the mentally ill and it is a legit science, I have seen people overcome mental illness through various means and it is miraculous when they do so, but some illnesses require extensive treatment that often the patient (usually BECAUSE of their mental illness) is not fully committing to.
But families within our society no longer place as high of a priority on coping strategies and open communication with their children, so you have millions of people who don't know how to cope with their problems and millions of children being pumped sugar and TV and the only answer we think there is is to drug them and treat them as if they were actually mentally ill - we don't want to outcast them and diet and exercise is no longer seen as an actual medical treatment.
Not an invalid science, just so many invalid ways of looking at it that it has finally rubbed off on the industry.
Do you think that Anger is genetic or a learned behaviour ?
