As long as someone isnt forcing their religion onto me, I see no problem.
Problem with that is while my neighbor may not be ramming the good book down my throat, we (USA) have systematically deemed ourself as a christian nation. MOST people get the major christian holidays off. But Judaism or Islam or any other religion, pfff forget that. We don't want to honor YOUR religion.
Yes we can ASK for those days off but you are still expected to catch up on missed (school) work or take it as an extra holiday... If it were easter or something, more places are willing to give you the day off for free or something there of.
But if your asked to give up something that isn't one of your holidays so you can get your holiday off why would you care. It's not your holiday. So let someone else take it off. And the work would still be given even if it wasn't your holiday. You just want your cake and eat it too. I give up Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years every year. No problem. But I get Samhain (Halloween) and Yule off every year. No one complains.
where I work I get Christmas and easter off but they won't let me trade in those holidays for Hanukkah and Passover. If I want those days off, I have to take them on my own time.
I would gladly come in on Christmas and work but the office closes on that day.
Do you think religion is a plague?

Read your employ handbook and talk to you HR department. In America your employer is required to give you your holidays off.
