That is not historically accurate. Intolerance and harsh social rules and structures were and are quite common to politheistic religions as well.

          Wrong.

It is the religions that believe in multiple Gods that are wrong.

I think a lot of people have a problem with reliigion, but I don't think it's going deep enough to solve the root to call it a plague. Most popular religious texts stripped down are just common sense stuff like, "Hey, murdering people? Maybe don't do that." So if people want to dig deep and stop the problem, they need to identify the roots. It's like humanity is obsessed with being in clubs, then decides the club sucks and they're going to start their own club with black jack and other things. I think the problem isn't religion, I think it's a flaw with people that needs a better solution.

Actually, the Bible doesn't forbid masturbation expressly. The reason why (many) Christians are against it is that sex is presented in the Bible as an expression of relationship, and of bonds between people. Masturbation is against this purpose. Logically, then, masturbation between couples is thus fine. But protestants tend to abide by conscience, not rules, so it'd be right for some and not right for others. We can often sense if we are displeasing God by our actions: like when you've dispeased anyone, there's a kind of distance...

As long as someone isnt forcing their religion onto me, I see no problem.

Problem with that is while my neighbor may not be ramming the good book down my throat, we (USA) have systematically deemed ourself as a christian nation. MOST people get the major christian holidays off. But Judaism or Islam or any other religion, pfff forget that. We don't want to honor YOUR religion.

Yes we can ASK for those days off but you are still expected to catch up on missed (school) work or take it as an extra holiday... If it were easter or something, more places are willing to give you the day off for free or something there of.

But if your asked to give up something that isn't one of your holidays so you can get your holiday off why would you care. It's not your holiday. So let someone else take it off. And the work would still be given even if it wasn't your holiday. You just want your cake and eat it too. I give up Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years every year. No problem. But I get Samhain (Halloween) and Yule off every year. No one complains.

religion can be defined as a relatively-bounded system of beliefs, symbols and practices that addresses the nature of existence.

It doesn't have to have any deities in that belief structure. For instance Buddhism and Jainism. Zen is another example.

Also writing "U so dumb man" while attempting to call me dumb, is dumb.

Religions are a form of social organization, and they do not ALWAYS neccessarily contribute to aggravating social problems. Some religious communities even struggle to address such problems, and there is a lot of variation between them. While conservative images of religion are more familiar, there are also thousands of liberal communities and believers around the world. It's not that easy to summarize all of religion with a simple negative judgment.

I don't think religion itself is a plague, just the people who are in it. It's like fandoms (any group really even countries). Like for example, Undertale is a good game. Some of the fans who took interest in it created an Undertale following i.e. A fandom. If you've ever heard anything from Undertale it was probably that the fans suck, they're annoying, they push their beliefs onto you, or hates anyone not in there group.

    Sound semi-familiar?
Most would say biggest religion offenders are Christians.
But that's dependent on your opinions.

People can and do bad things with or without having religion.

  • earthrickc137

to say all religion is or isn't negative is to make a huge generalization. most western christianity is harmless, for example. I don't consider nice old ladies who bring lemon bars to their weekly bible study to be a "plague," and if you do, your viewpoint is the malignant one. however, there are other types of religious people that are purely toxic, such as the westboro baptists and radical islam. all in all, religious folks are just people: some wouldn't hurt a fly, others we could do without.

While each religion or to be fair each faction of each religion could be analyzed as to how members within it get along with one another, I assume the point that you're making is referring to the difficulties that arise between multiple religions/sects within a religion/religious vs non religious people. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Here the aspect of religion that makes it difficult for people to get along is tribalism, something that exists just as much in pre-religious/current nonreligious societies (tribes). To have even a sample of several thousand people exist without there being multiple tribes at odds with one another is very difficult to achieve. In fact the only mechanism that has been able to hold peace across very large groups is religion.

There is plenty of information on hunter-gatherer societies I have studied out of passion to some extent. I don't mean to be making any big claim here. Simply that tribalism exists independent of religion. And that religious sects individually are the largest coexisting groups of people the world has seen. Both of these should be evident.

I would compare this to gun issues. A gun can be used for good, or to protect yourself. But there will always be people who take it too far, or people who cannot handle it. The gun isn't to blame. The person is.

No, it's not a plague. Plagues spread from host to host, without consent from the host. Religion is the mind of the host forcing itself willingly onto unwilling other types of religious and non-religious minds. The mechanics are different. While bacteria or viruses infect a human, religion is one with the human.

Except Darwinian selection applies to the survival of ideas, just like resistance applies to the survival of germs. Consider this. People in a society trade and talk about ideas all the time. Bad ideas are forgotten, good ideas are given to other people. Only the ideas that help the culture to survive last thru the centuries.

One of the most persuasive ideas of all time is Resurrection. The pharoas of Egypt told the slaves that the pyramids they were building were resurrection machines that would guarantee them a new better life. This lie pushed Egyptian civilization to supreme levels.

Science is slowly passing religion as the superior mindset needed to create a domainant culture.

I religions is fundamentally a way of improving the man at it's best.
Different religions have different opinions on what this "Best" is, and how to get there, though.
Religion is never a plague, but it can act like a plague if it teaches about hate and agression towards people not from this religion (much like islamism, for example)
Truly passific religions can live together in peace (like buddism and hinduism)

But multiculturalism is NEVER a good thing. All great empires of old fell because of that (Rome, Alexander, Khaan, Otoman...)
At the end, interaction between, not only religions, but the culture itself, will always cause problems
