Do you think "model", "porn star", and prostitute are the same?

  • I do understand where you're coming from.

The difference between a prostitute and a porn star is pretty arbitrary - and laws surrounding prostitution compared to porn often hypercritical; it's OK to be paid for sex so long as it's filmed and distributed as porn? How does that make sense?

So although a lot of people are having a go at you because you haven't expressed yourself in the best way, your basic point (that a porn star could be described as a prostitute of sorts) seems reasonable to me.

    • The difference is not arbitrary at all. In one case, money is being traded for a video. In the other case, money is being traded for sex.

Porn stars are selling depictions of themselves for entertainment. Porn stars are having sex with other porn stars, and the end product is a video. The transaction is between the audience who wants to buy the video, and the production company who is producing the video.

Prostitutes are selling the ACT ITSELF. The transaction is between the John who wanted sex, and the prostitute who performed the sex act.

      • Good point! Porn stars: money is given by the viewer for the video. Prostitutes: money is given by the john for the sex itself.

      • Yes, which imo is an arbitrary distinction.

Porn stars ARE selling the act itself, but they are selling it to the movie company - who is the client. The movie company then sells the depictions of the act on to the market.

It's prostitution in my eyes. Just prostitution to produce movies. That's why I find it absurd that producing porn is legal in so many places where prostitution is not (I think both should be legal but subject to restrictions).

        • No, the porn stars do not have sex with the directors (well, at least that's not what they're paid to do). They are being paid to have sex with other actors in a controlled environment so that a video can be produced and sold.

In prostitution, the commodity being sold is the sex itself. In porn, the commodity is the video.

          • I didn't say the porn stars have sex with the directors.

Not sure you get what I'm saying, so I'll leave it at that. We have different opinions.

            • No I absolutely get what you are saying. Pornstars get paid to have sex and prostitutes get paid to have sex therefore pornstars are the same as prostitutes.

But that surface-level analysis ignores important distinctions between the two, such as the nature of the sex and the actual commodities that are being sold.

Hell, a pornstar may not even have actual sex. The whole thing could be just staged at obstructed angles and then spliced together with editing. Or maybe the director will keep intervening and ask that the performers do specific things so that neither one actually enjoys it.
