Actually I think things are much better than they were in the past, overall. More people are getting advice and helping each other and the quality of the content has certainly improved over the years.
However, a few current users have taken it upon themselves to try to police the site by telling everyone else how dumb they are, or accusing them of being fake, or unoriginal. I think that after being on the site for a long time, they get bored with the content on it, which very naturally touches on similar topics over time, and instead of just skipping over things they don't like they satisfy their boredom with insults and mischief. This is also a big reason for the over 18 rule, as adults dont tend to do this as much.
This phenomenon also didn't exist in the early years because everything was still new and it was harder to get bored with the content on the site. Anyone that's been a member for years will naturally look back on the early days as more fun and interesting, just because it was fresh, but trust me, the site had a ton more junk on it back then. I've been trying to give long term members more ways to hang out without being disruptive to the regular flow of q&a by newer members, such as the chat room (the amount of totally off topic banter happening in comment threads before the chat room was really a big problem) and polls (these greatly increased the variety of topics that we can discuss on IIN). I'm not sure what the next thing along those lines should be, still brainstorming there (very open to ideas).
As for the general demeanor and attitude of the comments of the site, it's up to the regulars who do a large chunk of the commenting and voting to set the example for others to follow. This overall attitude fluctuates over time based on who happens to be most active and how nice or mean they happen to be. This constantly ebbs and flows. At the moment, I'll just say that IIN could use another dappled...
Regarding your second paragraph, I hope I'm not doing that. I know I'm not as nice/helpful as I should be sometimes, and sometimes I tend to joke around instead of answering the question seriously. Hearing responses like this one always makes me question my actions on this site. I am wondering, is the karma system still in the works? I think It would be interesting to know how well I do with my comments somehow, and what I might could do to improve them and my overall tactics.
About the next thing on this site, what if IIN had some kind of (simple) gaming section? Or an art section maybe? Or a poetry section? I'm not really sure how well any of those would do on here though... What about a dedicated section for users to collaborate on how good or bad a potential idea might be? A "potential improvements" section or something. Those are about all I can think of for now.
Do you think IIN changed?
