Sometimes I used to just leave after I got to school and hang out in town. It worked out because if you skipped homeroom you got put on the absent list and the teachers wouldn't write you up since they thought you were absent instead of skipping class. Nowadays that might be difficult with all the surveillance and stuff.
If I miss homeroom, they mark you unexcused for all your classes, unless your parents called in and said that you were sick. So that wouldn't work for me.
