  • Agnostics believe that Gods existence can be neither proven nor disproven. It takes a leap of faith to be a theist or an atheist.

    • No, faith is required to believe in something when there is no proof that such a thing exists. Faith is not required to not believe in something for which there is no proof.

There is no way to prove that Santa Clause does not exist. But it does not require faith to believe that he does not exist, because there is no proof that he exists and therefore no reason to believe that he does in the first place. Now if you do believe in Santa Clause, despite the lack of any evidence pointing to his existence, that would be faith.

It is the same with god.

      • Sounds like you have "null hypothesis" confused with proof by negation.

        • I am not confused by anything. To me, it does not take faith to not believe something I have no reason to believe in the first place.

Right now, in your living room, there could be thousands of invisible and completely undetectable aliens from planets all over the galaxy. You have no way of proving they are not there. But if you believe they aren't, and you want to call your reason for not believing "faith", go right ahead. I wouldn't use that word myself.
