I'm not entirely sure, I think it really depends on the person. Everybody is different, but I'd say an aggressive person is probably more likely to be drawn towards violent games and movies (as opposed to PG-rated games and shows.) Doesn't mean that the shows or games makes them violent, just that it feeds their interests. I could play Resident Evil and kick a few zombies in, but it won't make me more aggressive as I always get nervous around confrontational people/situations. :(
Only if they decide it too. It's bullshit to blame bad parenting on media.
I've watched 18+ horror films and have been playing games like GTA San Andreas since I was around 10 or 12 and I'm not affected at all by it. If anything it helped me realize that bad shit happens, being sheltered from that stuff is worse.
I have seen many children become aggressive with these games and also the way they speak to their fellow gamers is disgraceful. My own son came downstairs to find xbox live disconnected and almost every parent I know says it is the worst thing that ever entered their home as it has made their kids nasty and aggressive. My son's xbox is never used now and he's back to a normal loving teenager.
I tutor kids and parents that I know have to date ... ripped an xbox from the wall damaging the electrics, 2 have been dumped in the outside bins, 1 was smashed on the concrete garage floor, 1 was taken out into the drive and kicked up and down it, while yet another was thrown out of the downstairs window onto the drive.
I think the parents are telling you that these machines are ruining their children's personalities and I know that it did make my son aggressive and disrespectful. There have been criminal cases where children have re-enacted what they have played in these games.
Funnily enough I'd a conversation today about how TV has made parents a marketing man's dream, making the parents BUY all sorts of crap for their kids. Kids only want their parents time not all these gadgets that don't create memories for them.
I'll be honest, I don't know. I worked in the computer game industry when FPS games started to gather momentum and it seemed a taboo to us to simulate murder. But it's what the market demanded. Lots of game players wanted to experience a simulation of ending someone's life.
Did it make them do it in real life or did it actually prevent it by giving their rage an outlet, I also don't know. I've "killed" people in games but never in real life. I'm not 14 any more but am I saying it'll turn 14 year olds into serial killers? To be honest, no. I don't see any evidence. What I do see is that describing young people as weak-minded and so easily led is doing them a disservice.
Like a lot of people have already said on this post, you can blame the game or the video but ultimately, you need to blame the person. My country's most prolific serial killer was in his fifties.
