Oh, I thought you were just talking about the effect of the fairy tales!
Raising kids without giving in to the temptations of fast food and toys too often is hard, and it takes a whole lot of committment and being 'the bad guy' a lot!! Even when you have the best intentions, it's still hard!!
The hardest times I've had with this kind of stuff is actually from family members. They don't understand, or think it's 'cruel' that I don't buy, buy, buy and take the kids out to eat. They give birthday and Christmas gifts that literally make me sick. For example, one relative has so far given my children 2 video game systems. My girls are 4 and 6. Ugggh, vidoe games?? A lot of times, with gifts, it's so hard because you can't always intercept the gift before the child gets it, or when the relatives are close it's kind of an insult if I were to return the gift and have them ask about it, it's uncomfortable. I mean, you can't even really say anything about the type of gifts because it just seems out of line to me. I don't really know what to do about this, honestly, I haven't figured it out. I've suggested things when they've asked about a gift idea but it goes ignored, I guess because they don't see it as 'fun'.
I think I've done a good job as far as what's in my control, I am only disappointed in myself for letting them watch a bit more TV than they should.
Yes, I do see the 'buy, buy, buy' crap as bad, and it seems like people don't even notice what they're doing, it's like it has become normal to 'have to' have certain things, or that having 'things' makes you better or whatever. So, yes, I suppose I agree that people have been brainwashed.
Do you think Disney movies brainwashes children?
