I think that a lot of the religious teachings were made to keep people obeying in society. It could have been made up the the leaders of the tribe or country to keep people believing them and do what they tell them to do.
It could also just be beliefs from people thousands of years ago when the world was more of a new place to humans and it was surely something a lot better than we see it today and so they made up that there must be a god that created this world.
Also the church changes rules when it feels like it. For example in the 1960's they started making hell seem like a worse place to children to stop them from going out and enjoying themselves like everyone else. And a long time ago the church banned alcohol because other people started making it rather than the church and they made it out to be unholy. Even though the church itself made it, they just started losing out on money.
Sounds to me as if a lot of religions just are for making people act in a certain way that is required at the time.
